Dear URISA-AL Members,

I am pleased to announce that, after months of careful consideration, the Board of Directors has unanimously voted to change our Chapter name to “The GIS Association of Alabama.” This name was officially recommended by the Transition Committee, a new committee comprised of new and longstanding members and past officers formed by vote of the Membership at the Central Region Meeting. The Transition Committee will continue to work closely with the Board of Directors and Membership to make sure we follow all necessary procedures and take full advantage of this unique opportunity to reach out to all members of the GIS community throughout the State of Alabama.

We are still a chapter of URISA International, but believe that this name change will increase name recognition and serve as a vehicle for increased marketing and recruiting efforts which will ultimately help us to fulfill our mission: “to provide and facilitate professional GIS growth in Alabama through educational workshops, networking opportunities, and on-line resources.” There is still a lot of work to be done and we will be asking for assistance and drawing from the diverse set of talents in our group to help with specific tasks throughout the rest of this transition.

Please reach out to your local director, a member of the board, or a member of the Transition Committee if you would like to help. Remember, we still have some great events coming up this year and would love to have everything in place by FOSS4G Huntsville on August 14.

Thank You,
Matt Brown
President, GIS Association of Alabama
